So then what makes a sauna healthy?

Level 1: Safe Materials
Non-toxic materials are the absolute minimum. Things like wood glues, wood stains, wood fillers, and chemical treatments (termite/fungal) are extremely dangerous in a sauna.Level 2: Mechanical Ventilation
A simple vent hole only works in wood-fired saunas. Electric heaters do not create natural airflow. For electric setups, mechanical ventilation is a must. The system must ventilate 19 to 25 CFM of air per user at a time.Level 3: Engineered Material Safety
Extreme heat and humidity can turn originally safe materials to toxic. Trapped moisture within walls will mold which will release unhealthy spores; the sauna itself need to be designed to be able to dry its walls completely after use.
